Community Garden

Tanya Melendez has a deep love of the natural beauty contained within the city of Reading. Through her volunteer work with the 18th Ward of Reading, she is eager to bring nature to residents in a new and exciting way: A community garden, called “Cultivating Community at Oakbrook”

Community gardens are plots of land, usually in urban areas and they provide an opportunity for residents to grow their own vegetables & herbs close to home as well as provide a space for neighborhood-level social opportunities.

The garden will consist of 24 separate single or double plots for people to grow their own vegetables, including at least three ADA raised garden beds that will be accessible to residents in either walkers or wheelchairs.

The “Cultivating Community Garden in the Oakbrook Neighborhood” seeks to empower people to grow their own food, improving food security for individuals and families in need. We want to be able to provide this community the opportunity for positive social interaction and recreation in a beautiful, non-threatening atmosphere where individuals of all ages and backgrounds may interact in a healthy pursuit.
